While it’s easy to dramatize Kanchanaburi’s World War II history, there is much more to the city than the three most popular tourist sites: Death Railway, Bridge over the River Kwai and the Allied War Cemetery. Beyond its hectic modern center and river views, the city offers a number of enjoyable diversions, including bamboo rafting journeys along the River Kwai, a Khmer temple ruins tour, or a day out shopping at the gemstone village. The scenic riverside area can be a lovely spot for a leisurely stroll during the day but picks up at night as a bustling hotspot with karaoke bars and discos.
