Slovakia, Bratislava

Bratislava doesn’t provoke admiring swoons; it intrigues. In the midst of Slovakia’s capital, a flying saucer hovers above forest-fringed riverbanks. Its castle presides over a pastel-hued old town, but a concrete jungle looms behind. Despite the march of modernism, Bratislava is green. It banks the Danube River, by the Austrian border, and its hilly parks are threaded with hiking and biking trails. The Male Karpaty (Small Carpathians) roll north, with vineyards in their lowlands. Bratislava is a frenetic mix of wild and urban, classic and contemporary. Its preserved spires and squares from its 18th-century heyday, but now socialist-era monuments have joined the party. The nightlife is crowd-pleasing whether you prefer beer halls, rooftop cocktails or stag-party mayhem. In a city this exciting, who needs postcard pretty?

Beautiful Budapest BUD-01

Date: Fri Aug 23, 2019, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Duration: 4 Hours Price: Complimentary

Discover one of the most fascinating European metropolises by motor coach and by foot on an excursion that incorporates both sections of Hungary’s vibrant capital, Buda and Pest.

Departing your Crystal ship, enjoy your panoramic city introduction by motor coach. Travel along elegant Andrassy Boulevard to reach impressive Heroes’ Square, or Hősök tere, as it is known by the locals, recognized for its statue featuring the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. You will also see the Great Synagogue, principally known as the Dohány Street Synagogue.

Dating to 1854, the synagogue is the second-largest synagogue in the world and the largest functioning synagogue in Europe. Yet another amazing sight is the Hungarian Parliament Building, the massive Gothic Revival structure that is the iconic landmark of Budapest. Continue to the Buda side of Budapest, venturing up the hills overlooking the Danube valley to Castle Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, a short walk through the old part of Buda takes you around stunning Matthias Church and to Fisherman’s Bastion. A special Crystal Moment will treat you to one of several options: A folkloric dance, refreshments on the terrace of an atmospheric restaurant, or a performance at the Opera House. No matter the experience, it is sure to be a highlight of your Budapest explorations. After becoming acquainted with Budapest, the Pearl of the Danube, return by motor coach to your Crystal vessel.

Important Notes: As this excursion involves walking over uneven surfaces in the old city, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. Guests should be aware that this excursion involves substantial walking for a period of approximately 75 minutes in the Castle District, with approximately 30 steps at Fisherman’s Bastion. Crowding can be anticipated at Heroes’ Square and the Castle District, including at Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. It is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. The order of sights visited may vary. This excursion will operate in all weather conditions.

Jewish Budapest BUD-02

Date: Fri Aug 23, 2019, 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM

Duration: 4 Hours Price: Complimentary

Experience the rich Jewish history of Budapest with a visit to the magnificent Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest functioning synagogue in Europe. Also enjoy a guided walk through the old Jewish District, where you will see significant structures and institutions relating to Jewish culture.

Depart your Crystal ship and travel by motor coach to the Dohány Synagogue, also known as the Great

Synagogue. Dating to 1854, the synagogue is the second-largest synagogue in the world and the largest functioning synagogue in Europe. It also features prominently in Hungarian Holocaust history: This grand, Moorish Revival synagogue sits on Dohány Street, which formed the border of the Budapest Ghetto during World War II. On arrival at the synagogue, enjoy a visit to this marvelous place of worship, including its onsite Jewish Museum and Memorial of the Hungarian Jewish Martyrs, known colloquially as the Memorial Tree. Resembling a weeping willow, this work of art features leaves with inscriptions of the names of the at least 400,000 Hungarian Jews who were murdered by the Nazis. Continue your poignant look at Jewish history as you proceed by foot through the old Jewish District. Along the way, you may encounter the Gozsdu Courtyard, a popular meeting place for dining and socializing at the area’s restaurants and pubs. You may also see the Orthodox Kazinczy Synagogue and Rumbach Street Synagogue. Depending on availability, you may make a stop at a café for refreshments, enjoy some time at leisure, or drive to the shores of the Danube to find the “Shoes on the Danube Bank,” a spot commemorating the Jews who were ordered to remove their shoes before being shot by the Nazis. Struck by bullets, the bodies of the Jews would fall into the water, to be carried away. Pondering the sadness of such events and how Budapest continues to honor its Jewish past, return to your Crystal vessel by motor coach.

Important Notes: As this excursion involves a substantial amount of walking over uneven surfaces for a period of about 120 minutes, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. All guests who visit the synagogue should dress appropriately. Gentlemen are requested to cover their heads; ladies must cover their knees and shoulders, while gentlemen must wear pants. Shorts and miniskirts are not permitted. Bags of any kind are not permitted in the synagogue. Due to the popularity of sights visited, dense crowding and lines can be anticipated. It is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. The order of sights visited may vary. This excursion will operate in all weather conditions.

Feast for the Senses: Parliament Building & the Great Market Hall BUD-03

Date: Fri Aug 23, 2019, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Duration: 3.5 Hours Price: Complimentary Walking: Moderate

The sights sound and flavors of Budapest come alive with exterior and interior visits to the Hungarian Parliament Building, one of the world’s most stunning structures, and an exploration of the Great Market Hall, the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest.

Board your motor coach and travel to the Hungarian Parliament Building, the iconic landmark of Budapest. Crowned by a magnificent central dome and hailed as the city’s tallest building, the Gothic Revival structure is impossible to miss. Marvel at its sheer size and splendid architecture with a walk around the building and a guided inside visit. As you will see, the interior is beautifully adorned. You may even have the opportunity to view the Holy Crown of Hungary in the central hall. Following your Parliament Building discovery, make the motor-coach transfer to the Great Market Hall, the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest. Built in 1897, it offers a wonderful assortment of stalls over three floors. The ground floor features an array of meats, spices, candies, pastries and caviar, while the second-floor houses various eateries and souvenir shops. The three floors of the market also include the basement, where you can find the fish market and butcher shops. Savor the Great Market Hall’s panoply of offerings with a chance to sample its goods and relish about 30 minutes free time. After delighting in the colorful sights and enticing aromas at the Great Market Hall, return to your Crystal river yacht on the Danube.

Important Notes: As this excursion involves a substantial amount of walking for a period of about 120 minutes, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. It is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. Due to the popularity of sights visited, dense crowding and lines can be anticipated. Please note that the Hungarian government reserves the right to close the Parliament Building at any time with no advanced warning; should this become the case, an alternative program will be offered. The order of sights visited may vary. This excursion will operate in all weather conditions.

Important Notes: It is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. The order of sights visited may vary. This excursion will operate in all weather conditions.

Hungary, Budapest

Hungary is lakeside serenity, fairy-tale castles, and grandeur on the Danube. With stunning architecture, vital folk art, thermal spars, and Europes most exciting capital after dark are Hungary’s major draws. The scene is more gentle then striking, but you cants say the same thing about the built environment across the land. Architecturally Hungary is a treasure trove, with everything from Roman ruins and medieval townhouses to baroque churches, neoclassical public buildings and art nouveau bathhouses and schools. Hungarians have been ‘taking the waters’ supplied by an estimated 300 thermal springs since togas we all the rage and Aquincum was a Big Smoke. They still do- for therapeutic, medicinal and recreational purposes. When the locals arn’t relaxing the food remains the most sophisticated style of cooking in Eastern Europe. They take extreme pride in their nation’s world-renowned wines – from the big-bodied reds of Eger and Villany and white olaszrizling from Badacsony to honey-sweet Tokaj. Whatever you are looking for, you can be sure to find it, in the most authentic way while visiting Hungary.
